1935 - Hartlepool Old Boys' v Consett & District

What we know about this image :

Over the years, several people from the two towns have been honoured with the Presidency of the Durham County RFU; one such was Mr J T Nicholson of Old Boys who held the post between 1934 and 36.  This photo shows him unfurling the new Flag for Consett & District RFC prior to their game again Old Boys at Blackhill. The game itself is described in one terse line on the back of the photo thus “The game was played in the gale but was marvellous how they controlled the ball” Thanks to that brief line we can date this image to 19th October 1935 when gale force winds prevailed that day and Consett and Old Boys played a 0 – 0 all draw. The Old Boys team on the day was A Watling, D Widdowfield, J Johnson, R McClelland, RR Lancaster, W Waller, J Tate, J Blogg, R Emerson, G Bradshaw, G Ainsley, M McIntosh, W Stringer, R Calvert, C Brownless with A Winn and B Robson as reserves.

James Thomas (Jimmy Nich) Nicholson (1880 – 1958) was a long-time member of Old Boys, playing originally for the Boys Brigade in the 1890s he went on to play for Old Boys then became Club Secretary and later served as President from 1925 to 1948. In his working life he spent 58 years with the Pilotage Authority being Pilotmaster & Collector from 1915 to 1950.
