1912 - Hartlepool Rangers

What we know about this image :

Held in the Robson family album, this photograph dates from 1912 and shows one of the very successful Rangers sides that were prominent during the Edwardian period, the club name reviving the name of an earlier Rangers that ceased playing in 1892.

Currently only one of players in the photo can be identified, seated on the right hand edge of the 3rd row is George Thomas Corner (1887 – 1963), another regular in the side at this time and possibly on the photograph is Gordon Khartoum Gilchrist (Club captain in 1908/09 season) who was born in 1885 and named after General Gordon and the incident in Khartoum that year. Gordon K Gilchrist was killed during World War 1 dying on the Somme in September 1916.

Another player from the Rangers side, who may be on this pic, is forward Joe (“Tinner”) Unthank, who was chosen to play for Durham against Cheshire on the Friarage Field in 1907 but declined! He would have been the first player from a Junior Club to play for Durham; the honour went to a Southwick Rangers player, G H Hedley who played against Lancashire in 1912. Joe Unthank did again get selected for County XV against Northumberland at Percy Park in Jan 1911 but withdrew through injury.
