Although the Pyman Cup is in its 12th decade of Competition in town, the format has been under constant review, initially it was played on a home and away League basis, then for many years it was played on a knockout basis, both formats spread over the whole season, lately it has been played in a very small April evening time slot.
In recent times with the advent of Leagues, team squads and leisure time pressures from society, the District Union decided in 2016 to for a shorter, snappier format and introduced in 2017, a Ten-a-side, ten minutes each way, round robin format. The very first Competition was held at Hartlepool RFCs Mayfield Park Ground in April, 2017, and resulted in a win for West Hartlepool II over Hartlepool Rovers II by 17 pts to 14. Hartlepool II taking 3rd place and Seaton Carew in 4th.
