1893 - Fred Alderson Hartlepool Rovers (2)

What we know about this image :

Fred Alderson in his Durham jersey (which would have been Maroon), with the Cross of St Cuthbert prominent probably dating from 1893. In the 1870s players played County games in their own Club jerseys with a St Cuthbert Cross sewn on, however, Durham decided to play in their familiar Maroon and White in1880 originally with the Cross of St Cuthbert as a badge as in this photo, except for one season in 1886 when it was decided to play in Black & White hoops, which never transpired.  The next major change came in 1896 when it was decided to play in Maroon and White hoops with the Arms of the See of Durham (4 Lions and a Cross), the hoops soon went and it has been Maroon jerseys with County badge , white shorts and Maroon socks ever since.
