The most urgent need for Rovers when they moved to their then new Headquarters at West View Road in 1948 was the need for a clubhouse and changing accommodation. Thanks to the generosity of Fred Peart, several Nissen Huts were acquired from a disused POW Camp at Haltwhistle and brought to the “New Friarage”. The Featherstone POW camp had opened in 1944 to accommodate American soldiers arriving for the Normandy invasions. Subsequently it was used for Italian POWs and then rehabilitating Nazi officers, it was then closed in the summer of 1948.
The Huts continued to serve a useful purpose for the Club until 1966 when Rovers moved into their new purpose-built clubhouse.
This picture taken in the early 50s by the Mail, gives an idea of the accomdation at the time, Club Officials pictured at possbly a Club or Oakes Dinner, Joe Handisides is seated 2nd from the left of the shot, others are currently being identified.
This series of pics taken in and around the Club at the time give a good idea of the buildings internally. The event is probably a club or Oakes Dinner, work is on going to identify the “unknown” members.
