A poster to remind us of another Rugby playing School “Brougham Street” (the Street itself is now part of Durham Street), this poster probably dates from 1905 onwards. After suffering a slump in popularity, efforts were made at this time,to revive the Game in the two towns; one method was to introduce Leagues into the Schools Programme. Galleys were one School that made a huge contribution to the health of the Game over many years producing a lot of outstanding players.
It also highlights what great value was to gained from an afternoon at the Friarage Field in those days , few posters in the Robt Wood Rugby Collections are for one game only, many, like this always advertise a “curtain raiser” plus a Big game, Harrogate still a leading light in Yorkshire Rugby today.
This poster would be placed in Sandwich boards on the Saturday around the town giving the “bare bones” of the day’s events. Earlier a larger poster would have been posted giving more detail of the day!
