1906 - Durham County v South Africa (3)

What we know about this image :

The Durham County XV rugby team and officials posing on the steps at the Swainson Street entrance to the Grand Hotel. The team had played South Africa tourists on the Victoria Ground (now Victoria Park and the home to Hartlepool United),and lost on October 6th 1906 by 22 pts to 4 pts.

The town retains this remarkable record of hosting the 3 most powerful Southern Hemisphere sides in their first overseas tours which started in the first decade of the 20th Century.  The tours also mark the acheivement of Dominion Status by the Australians and New Zealanders. Remarkably the Grounds on which the tourists are still in use, the Friarage Field in Moor Terrace is now home to Hartlepool BBOB whilst the Victoria Ground where the 1908 Australians played features Professional League soccer.
