On 18 July 1885 Bertie was ashore at Suakim, Egypt.
In a convoy of six merchant vessels which were sailing from Scotland to Norway escorted by four armed trawlers & two destroyers, Partridge& Pellew. Bothnia was on a voyage from Newcastle to Bergen with a crew of 20 when she was sunk by shells from German cruisers V.100 AND S.1010 under the command of Captain Heinicke. All the trawlers & merchant vessels were sunk by the attack which took place in the North Sea in 59.43N/4.10E on 12 December 1917. Ten lives were lost.
