She was fitted with heavy lift derricks to handle tanks, aeroplanes etc. Stores were taken aboard at West Hartlepool & Empire Elgar then went to Middlesbrough to load up war supplies. On 3 May 1942 she sailed for Methil, Loch Ewe, Iceland & North Russia.
