Chicklade - a brief history
Built: 1888 by Messrs Edward Withy & Co., Hartlepool. Yard No 158. Steel steam ship
Launched on 21st November 1888 by Miss Cosie (Alice Constance) Richardson (7yrs old)
Masters: 1890-91 W Louttit: 1892-93 Collinwood: 1894-96 WM Davies: 1896-1900 SO Northfell: 1902-03 EB Sanderson: 1905 JW Eno: 1906 ET Atkins: 1907-11 MG Harrison.
T.H. Webber, mate of the Chicklade was awarded a sea gallantry medal for services rendered in January 1905.

Engine: 3 cylinder triple expansion steam engine built by Thos. Richardson, Hartlepool, Engine No 95884. Cylinders 22”, 37” & 61” diameter by 39” stroke operating at 152 psi. 232nhp. 2 single-ended boilers with 6 ribbed furnaces, grate surface 101 sq. ft. New double ended boilers fitted in 1901.
Owners: Built for George Horsley & Co., owners restyled Horsley Line Ltd in 1899. 1913/14 sold to W. Coupland. 1914 bought by the Admiralty for use as a block ship.
Notes: Chicklade is a place in Wiltshire. Ran ashore in East Bay, Dungeness during a gale on 25th January 1895 with a cargo of coal, re-floated with the aid of tugs on Sunday 27th January 1895 & proceeded under tow to London, badly strained.
Loss: Sunk by the Admiralty as a block ship at Sunderland in 1914 along with three other ships (Berkshire, Tynedale, Fernlands). Wreck removed 1960.
