High School field

What we know about this image :

Taken around 1913 just after the school opened, it is most likely that this field is on the Elwick Road side of the school.

On the far left, Elwick Road School can be seen on the end of Belmont Gardens. The fence across the centre is Eldon Grove we believe and none of the houses at that end of the grove have been built. The trees are on Elwick Road and are on a map of the time. The bungalow on the right we believe to be the lodge for Claremont House (Claremont was later a school, then demolished and  sheltered flats built. It is now a new development of retirement homes) This bungalow could perhaps have been the lodge for  Brinkburn when that was a private house, as there was apparently a long drive to the house originally from Elwick Road.

This lodge is still there today, close to the entrance to the Burn Valley near Eldon Grove although it is covered by trees.

The field where the girls are playing are probably where Eldon Grove Bowls and Tennis Club is now as maps of 1919 show fields on the site of the Club.
