Evelyn Harrison was a somewhat eccentric voluntary charity worker who founded the West Hartlepool Lonely Hearts' Club. She was very well known in the town and by many in other parts of this and other countries. Some felt that she was something of a laughing stock and brought attention to the town for the wrong reasons. Apparently she wrote to President Nixon offering advice saying 'all men at the top are lonely'. She certainly worked tirelessly to aid a number of charities, putting on concerts and fundraising.
She was seemingly widowed in World War 2, ran a Helen Shapiro Fan Club and eventually founded her Lonely Hearts Club which met in the Engineers' Club.
