A reminder of the boom times of the 1960s when a couple of dozen sides entered the Durham County 4th Teams Shield regularly, season 63/64 was memorable for Old Boys when their 4th XV reached the Final. They played through 5 rounds of the Shield defeating Newton Aycliffe 0 – 3 away, Blaydon IV at home but no score was recorded, then another home win against Sunderland IV by 21 – 9. The Semi saw them account for South Shields Y.M.C.A II by 18 – 8 before they went down to West IV by just 8 – 3 possibly on the Greyhound Stadium. This result was West’s third consecutive defence of the trophy; they were to win in the following season to make it four in a row.
