Peggy ( Margaret) Bulmer was also known as Appleby. She was born in 1793 and died in 1878. Showing here with her pipe and a telescope under her arm this image would have been taken about 1853. She always wore a man's coat and smoked a 'cutty pipe'. In her youth she had spent many years at sea as 'a man before the mast'. When the old cannon, which had been brought up from the Tees, was fired for a wedding in about 1839 she had lit the fuse.
