Fate

The West Hartlepool-owned steamship Stanley was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-24 Walter Remy) off south-west Ireland, on March 21st, 1917. The ship was on a voyage from Newport News to Cherbourg with a cargo of iron ore and oats.

Eight crew were lost, including two from the Hartlepools:
Valentine Cummins,
Laurence Lupton.

The other lost crewmen were:
Burns, F.; Coates, George Thomas; Lapinsky, S.; Milton, John; Morris, Richard; Thomas, John.
