Fate

The Middlesbrough-built steamship Calliope was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-65 (Hermann von Fischel) off the west coast of Sicily on 5th April, 1917. Three crew were taken prisoner. The ship was on a voyage from Cardiff to Malta with a cargo of coal.

Six crew were lost including West Hartlepool-born Chief Engineer James Luther Turnbull.

The other crewmen who lost their lives were: Ah Sang; Gee Yow; Lon Lew; White, Frederick W. (who may have had Hartlepool connections); You Gee.
