Fate

The steamship Grenadier sank after striking a mine laid by the German submarine UC-4, 6 miles north-east of the Shipwash Light Vessel, on February 23rd, 1917.

Eight of the crew were lost including West Hartlepool-born Wireless Operator William Gamble.

The other crewmen who lost their lives were: Armstrong, John; Aubin, John Richard; Bellwood, Robert John; Chisholm, Alexander; Clarke, Charles Quinn Harry; Moran, Michael John; Swan, Sidney.
