Fate

The steamship Hackensack was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-82, 180 miles north-west of Fastnet, on April 25th, 1917. The ship was on a voyage from Cienfuegos, Cuba, to Queenstown with a cargo of sugar.

Six of the crew were lost including West Hartlepool-born Thomas William Lowes.

The other five crewmen who lost their lives were: Ali Yusuf; Elma, Omar; Hasan Muhammad; Hashim Ali; Umar Muhammad.
