The steamship Ilston was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB-23, 4 miles south-east of the Lizard, on June 30th, 1917. The ship was on a voyage from Swansea to France with a cargo of railway materials.
Six of the crew were lost including Henry Cave of West Hartlepool.
The other crewmen who lost their lives were: Ali Hasan; Gent, Charles William; Hinson, Nelson; Richards, Joseph; Said Nusair.
