Swainson Street, Hartlepool. Most of Swainson Street was demolished to make way for Middleton Grange Shopping Centre. The only section left contains The Grand Hotel.

The massive house clearance programme has obliterated Hanover Street,Wesley Street, Peckett Street and Swainson Street and much of where these streets were is the market part of Hartlepool Shopping Centre and the shops behind the cenotaph. Taken by Robert Wood in 1967.

Demolition of Ward Street and Swainson Street

Donated by Robert Wood CollectionTaken in 1967 by Robert Wood, the image shows the Grand Hotel on the right and in front on the far right is the back of Binns store. Ward Street was parallel to Binns and one side of the road shared a back street with the store. The Austin van in the centre is parked in Swainson Street although the buildings have been cleared to make way for the shopping centre. The cenotaph can also be seen on the picture.

Donated by Robert Wood CollectionLooking towards the Grand Hotel, the image dated 1965, shows some houses already boarded up prior to demolition to make way for Middleton Grange Shopping Centre. The street and area around was well used, in those pre large car park days, by shoppers at Binns which is out of sight on the right hand side. This is indicated by the parking sign.
