More detail »Amelia Earhart was an American aviation pioneer and writer. In July 1937, while undertaking a round the world flight, her plane disappeared over the Pacific Ocean. Her disappearance became an enduring mystery.
At that time, Thomas Morgan Hill, of West Hartlepool was serving on the SS. Moorby. The ship was in the vicinity were Amelia's plane had gone missing. The Captain of the ship received a marconigram from The Daily Mirror asking for a personal story of the
rescue mission.
Transcription reads:

"Will pay liberally for your personal story by radio Earhart rescue"
