From petty criminal and school admission records we learn that Arthur Bakes Bradbury was born on the 5th December 1888 in Hartlepool . His birth was registered in the March qtr 1889, Hartlepool as Arthur Bradbury. He was the son of Arthur Bakes Bradbury and Ellen Moore who had married at All Saints, Stranton in 1881.

In 1891 the family were living at 1 Thompson Square , Stranton and Helena Bradbury, 33, was a Sailor’s wife born West Hartlepool . There were four sons, William 8, John 6, Charles 4 and Arthur 2, all born West Hartlepool . A newspaper cutting of June 1895 states that Arthur Bakes Bradbury of Musgrave St West Hartlepool is not responsible for any debts his wife Ellen Bakes Bradbury may contract after June 1895. It therefore appears that they possibly parted.

According to the record from Castle Howard Reformatory School,in 1902 and 1903 young Arthur Bradbury seems to have fallen in with bad company. However this 1906 record (shown) provides amazing information which any family historian would be delighted to find.

By 1911 they are living at 124 Stanley Street , Grimsby  but by now Arthur Bakes Bradbury must have been elsewhere but his father was at home with Helen (Ellen) again.

Helena, wife 51, married 30 years, who had given birth to 9 children, 2 of which had died and she was born at Seaton Carew. Children shown were Ernest Bakes Bradbury, Samuel Bakes Bradbury and Joseph Bakes Bradbury. They all seem to have adopted the Bakes as a middle name by 1911.
