Lost on the steam trawler Doris Burton, of Hartlepool.

Thomas Smith Coulson was probably born in South Shields in 1876, son of Matthew, a coal trimmer and Mary Jane Coulson nee Ruddy, who were also born in South Shields and were married in 1891.

In 1901 they are living at 8 Garwood Street, South Shields . Thomas is 25 and a Labourer in the Iron Foundry. His wife is recorded as Polly who was 26 and they have a son Robert aged 6, all were born in South Shields . Robert is Robert Jackson Coulson and he was born in 1895.

 In 1911 Thomas and his family are living at Durham Street , Hartlepool . Thomas is a sea going engineer, in trawling. Mary  states she has been married 18 years and had two children, one had died. Robert J is 16 and an office boy in a Ship Brokers'.

 Thomas S. Coulson died 21st November 1917 on the SS Doris Burton when she was hit by a mine.
