Roll of Honour

Hartlepool seafarers lost at sea

Gamble, John William

Able Seaman
14, Adelaide Street, West Hartlepool
Glasgow Scotland
6/11/1882
26/4/1915

Died of illness while serving aboard the hired Minesweeper HMS Folkestone, operating in the Mediterannean.

William Gamble was born on 6th November 1882 in Glasgow. The 1891 census however states his birthplace as Belfast like that of his older brother who was also killed at sea. The family certainly moved from Belfast to Hartlepool to Coleraine and back to Hartlepool so could well have also lived in Glasgow!

William's name is on the Chatham War Memorial and his widowed mother was informed of his death at 14, Adelaide Street, West Hartlepool.
