William Muir died at Queensferry Hospital on June 3rd, 1916, from injuries sustained at the Battle of Jutland, while serving on board the battleship HMS Lion.

William was one of 11 children of Robert Muir from Perth in Scotland and his wife Frances,nee Musgrove, who was a native of Hartlepool. The couple were married in Hartlepool in 1871. On the 1881 census, the family were living in Moreland Street and father Robert was a timber labourer. In 1895, Robert died  and Frances was by then living at 51 Charlotte Street with her large family.

On the 1911 census, William was a miner and his brothers dock labourers.

He was  living at 51, Charlotte Street, West Hartlepool, at the time of his death and his mother was informed.  He is buried in Dalmeny Cemetery South Queensferry in Fife.
