Robert Robson Clements was born at West Hartlepool on April 16th, 1890, to parents Stephen and Anne Elizabeth Clements (nee Robson), and baptised at Stranton on May 18th, 1890. His father Stephen is listed as a Gardener, and their address as The Laurels.
Stephen, born in Elmdon, Essex, and Anne at Widdrington, Northumberland, were married at Morpeth in 1889.

The 1911 Census shows Stephen and Anne living at No.29, Gray Street, West Hartlepool, with their six children; Robert Robson (now aged 20, Apprentice Engine Fitter), Harry (17, Apprentice Toolmaker), Walter (15, Apprentice Brass-finisher), Sidney George (14, just completed school), May (7), and Lillian (5). Also in the house at this tme is a Boarder, Fred Austin Battle, a 38-year old Ship Plater from Middlesbrough.
