Roll of Honour

Hartlepool seafarers lost at sea

Wright, Thomas Rennie

Stoker
12, Lancelot Street
Wingate Co Durham
1887
1/11/1917

Thomas Rennie Wright was one of 12 children born to George Wright and his wife Mary Jane (nee Firby). He, along with all but 2 of his siblings were born in Wingate, near Hartlepool. George described himself as a farmer in 1891 and the family were living at Hutton Henry. It is more likely that he was a farm labourer as in 1901 he was in Hart Lane Hartlepool with his family and was a labourer in the engine works. George had been born in Elwick and Mary Jane at Sheraton.

By 1911, the family were living in Lancelot St Hartlepool but Thomas was not with them.

Thomas Rennie Wright was a stoker on the light cruiser HMS Penelope in WW1.  His cause of death is currently unclear but was on 3rd November 1917 and is registered in Hartlepool. On a roll of honour, his parents' address in Lancelot Street, West Hartlepool is given. He is buried in North Cemetery, Hartlepool, not in a war grave, and his address given as Suggitt Street.
