John Henry Bell was the son of Henry Bell and Eliza ( Elizabeth ) Nixon. Henry and Eliza married in Scarborough in 1852. By 1861 Henry and Eliza were living at Duke Street ,Hartlepool Headland. Their daughter Jane, aged 7 was born in Scarborough and their next child, also a daughter, Anne, aged 6 was born in Hartlepool so they must have moved to Hartlepool sometime after the birth of Jane and before Anne’s birth. Henry was a Coast Guard Officer.

 

 

 

In 1871 the Bell family is at 2 Prissick Street , Hartlepool and Henry Bell is a Customs Officer. There are three more children Minnie, 9, John Henry 7 and Florence 2 all born in Hartlepool . In 1881 they are at 4 Church Street , Hartlepool Headland, Henry is an Excise Office with H.M. Customs and John Henry is an Engineer’s Apprentice. In 1896 John Henry Bell married Hannah Knaggs in St. Hilda’s Church, Hartlepool .

 

 

 

In 1901 John Henry Bell and Hannah are living at 120 Riverdale Road , Erith , Kent along with their 2 year old daughter Hilda, born c1899, Erith , Kent .

 

 

 

In 1911 John and Hannah are at 61 Horsa Road , Belvedere , Kent which is the address quoted when John died 20th October 1917 on SS Algarve off Portland Bill when she was sunk by a German submarine. He was a second engineer. The census states that there had been 3 children, all alive. At 61 Horsa Road , are children John Nixon aged 8, born Erith , Kent and Frank aged 4, born Belvedere , Kent . Hilda is not at Horsa Road
