The steamship Heminge was torpedoed and sunk in the North Atlantic, by the German submarine U-37 (Victor Oehrn), on September 30th, 1940. The ship was on a voyage from the Tyne to Tenerife with a cargo of coal. One crewman was lost. Master Trevor Thomas.
