Astraea - a general history

Voyages: On 23 June 1888 Astraea sailed with a cargo of 2710 tons of iron & a crew of 22 all told. On 21 July she was in the Arabian Sea when severe damage occurred to her boilers & she was sailed to Bombay where a temporary furnace was fitted to get her back to her home port. The chief engineer was found to be responsible for the damage & his certificate was suspended for three months.

Astraea was bound from Newport for Genoa & sank after a collision with the steamer Oasis near Cape San Sebastian on 8 October 1898. No lives lost.
