Victoria - a general history

Victoria 1841-1852

St Paul’s Bay, Quebec: one deck; two masts; standing bowsprit; square rigged; square stern; carvel built wood brig; 135t; 72.2 x 20.5 x 16.5; female bust figurehead.

Owners: John Bishop (Greenwich, Flint) London; December 1849 Robert Robinson Gowland (plumber) & John Bunter, Hartlepool; October 1851 John Meldrum (sailmaker) & John Punshon Denton, Hartlepool.

Masters: 1850 John Bunter; April 1850 Thomas Hird (Sunderland); 1852 Alexander Pirie.

On a voyage from Lowestoft for Hartlepool in ballast & a crew of five Victoria sprang a leak & foundered at 5am about 25 miles off Dimlington, Withernsea on 3 December 1852. No lives lost; Loss recorded by letter from Alexander Pirie, master, to Hartlepool Customs House.
