On a voyage from Hartlepool for Hamburg with a cargo of coal Hunter was abandoned at sea on 11 March 1857. The crew were landed at Bremershaven. On the same day the derelict brig was seen in a sinking state near Texel by the steamer Harmonia. Hartlepool Customs House register gives date as 9 April 1857.
