Ross-shire - a general history

Voyages: In February 1889 she was in a collision with the Norwegian Barque Henrick Bjorn & was damaged so put into Cardiff for repair: from Hamburg for Philadelphia with a cargo of sugar & a of 22 she had her decks swept during a Force 10 NE gale in the North Atlantic near the coast of America on 24 November 1893. One life lost: September 1896 on a voyage from Memel she put in at Grimsby with the loss of part of her deck cargo during heavy weather.

On a voyage from Cardiff for St Nazaire with a cargo of coal & a crew of 23 she was in a collision with the French steamer SS Duguesclin from Rouen to Swansea in ballast with a crew of 23, off Trevose Head, Cornwall on 4 January 1899. The survivors were picked up by the Norwegian steamer Fran. A Swedish fireman aboard Ross-Shire was killed by the impact while in his bunk. Both ships sank. 11 lives lost from Duguesclin. One life lost from Ross-Shire
