North of Fremantle was the profitable route dubbed the ‘wild & woolly west.’ The Adelaide Steamship Company’s best passenger ship was SS Koombana built especially for the NW trade in 1909. Colac which was outdated by this new ship, was still running regularly on the north–west coast at the time, & could stow a maximum of 291 bullocks & 2,000 sheep or 376 bullocks. It also had the capacity to cater for 15 passengers.

On a voyage from Derby, West Australia to Fremantle West Australia with livestock Colac was stranded in King Sound, Western Australia on 17 September 1910. She was eventually towed into Derby, Western Australia & hulked. The Marine Court found the master guilty of poor navigation & suspended his certificate for two months. No lives were lost.
