Extract from the January 1959 issue of Sea Breezes:
"The Chester was lost in collision in the Elbe at Brunsbuttelkoog in September 1910, with the Norwegian steamer Hugin, bound from the Baltic to Rotterdam. Inward bound for Hamburg, the Chester later sank after 700 cases of herrings had been discharged into lighters and brought into Altona. A quantity was later washed out, landed at Cuxhaven and sold by public auction. The Hugin, holed on the starboard side above the waterline, put back for repairs. Damage to the Chester was later described as "hole on the starboard side extending for five plates, false keels on both sides broken off, bottom torn for whole length of port false keel, bridge and boat deck smashed, rails carried away, funnel broken and funnel casing completely stove in."
