Bound from Cardiff for Tunis with a cargo of coal Provvidenza was abandoned in a sinking condition 95 miles off Cape Vilano in the Bay of Biscay on 11 November 1908. The master thought that the vessel had struck a submerged object causing a leak. The Greek steamer Andriana picked up 16 survivors & landed them at Barry. Two cooks, two firemen & a seaman drowned when their boat broke up as they tried to reach the Andriana. Five lives lost.
