Hartlepool RFC remains the oldest surviving club to have won the County Junior Cup, in addition they remain the only club to have won the original Pyman League and Pyman Cup as a knockout trophy.
That win in the Junior Cup came way back in 1895 when they defeated Sleetburn (a colliery side from south west of Durham City) on the ground of Sherburn House RFC, east of Durham City. With the introduction of the Leagues in the mid 1980s the County Cup system was revamped with the Junior Cup becoming the Challenge Trophy, albeit only for a few seasons, and Hartlepool found themselves in the Trophy Competition or Junior Cup.
They put their name back on the plinth once more in 1988/89 season when they defeated West Hartlepool TDSOB by 7 pts to 6 on their own Mayfield Park ground.
