Countless children took part in Cycling Proficiency tests where they had to learn the relevant parts of the highway code and were eventually tested as they followed a route around the town. Here the children are assembled on the Bull Field with the Boys' Technical School behind and part of the nursery school to the right. The image is from around 1954.
