The ten planes left the beach on the morning of 15 May 1914. Just after ascending the eighth plane, piloted by Lieutenant Harland, came down on the Seaton Carew golf links after the exhaust pipe of the eight cylinder machine became disconnected. The two propeller blades were smashed & the machine was driven into a sandbank where the wheel axle became disconnected & the runners were broken. The plane was dismantled & taken to the Royal Flying Corps headquarters.
