Fate

The defensively-armed British steamship Rio Verde was torpedoed and sunk without warning, by the German submarine U-100 (Helmut Patzig), 4 miles west of Crammock Head, Mull of Galloway, on February 21st, 1918. The ship was on a voyage from Glasgow to Milford Haven, with a cargo of coal.

Twenty crew were lost including one from the Hartlepools, 3rd Engineer William Richardson.
