Fate

The steamship Algarve was torpedoed and sunk by  the German submarine UB-38, 15 miles off Portland Bill, on October 20th, 1917. The ship was on a voyage from Rouen to Swansea in ballast. 

Twenty one crew were lost, including West Hartlepool-born 2nd Engineer John Henry Bell

The other crewmen who lost their lives were: Ah Ling; Ah Wong; Ah Yi; Alegy, R.; Bralo, F.; Brooks, Edward; Chu Ng; Davison, Sidney Ford; Holt, John Mountjoy; Kow Leong; Kow Long; Lewis, Patrick George; Ng Hoi; Robertson, James; Romas, R.; Tan Ah Kim; Tucker, John Henry; Whillock, Richard; Wong C.; Wong Wah.
