The battlecruiser HMS Invincible, was destroyed by a magazine explosion during the Battle of Jutland, on May 31st, 1916. All hands - more than one thousand men - were lost, including six from the Hartlepools: Edward George Bartholomew, Albert William Bate, David Hamer, Patrick Moran, Alexander Spence, and William Thomas.
