Fate

Reindeer was on her first voyage & sailing homeward from Nicolaieff for Falmouth (for orders) with a cargo of wheat & a crew of 20. It was believed that her cargo shifted during a gale 28 miles east of Pantellaria Island in the Mediterranean causing her to capsize & founder on 14 December 1872. The mate was drowned but the remainder of the crew were picked up by the Mary Ann of Sunderland & then transferred to the North Shields steamer George Wascoe & landed at Malta. One life lost. Tate, 2nd mate. Master - P. Schwabe.
