Richard Nicholson Ripley was born 23 June 1901 and died 14 July 1996. In the 1920s he was part of the athletics squad that included Eric Liddel and Harold Abrahams whose story was told in the Oscar winning film Chariots of Fire.More detail »
Richard "Dick" Ripley was selected as Britain's second best runner for the 1924 Paris Games. His team took bronze in the 4x400m relay. Dick won 27 gold medals in his career before a ligament injury prevented further competition. He was born in North Ormesby and grew up in Hartlepool.
