On a voyage from London for the Tyne in ballast during a storm that was causing havoc up and down the coast, the steamship Nellie Wise went ashore on Blackhall Rocks three miles NW of Hartlepool on 8th January, 1908. Fifteen of the crew were rescued by rocket apparatus. One life was lost, that of the Second Mate, Warnes Newland, of South Shields.
