Bound from Newcastle-on-Tyne for Odessa with a cargo of coal on 14 December 1872 the cargo of the Otterburn shifted & she became leaky. With her pumps choked & on her beam ends she was abandoned on 15 December 1872 in the Bay of Biscay 50 miles off Cape Finisterre. The crew left in their boat & were picked up by the Louise Hillemann & landed at Gibraltar. No lives lost.
