The steamship Rappahannock was captured and sunk by the German submarine U-69 off the Scilly Isles on 26th October, 1916. The ship was on a voyage from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to London with a cargo of timber and apples.
Although her crew safely abandoned ship, none of their lifeboats reached shore or were picked-up by other ships, and all 37 men, including Hartlepool-born Chief Engineer George William Hall, were lost.

As an illustration of the truly global nature of shipbuilding, these ships were owned by companies from 22 different countries, including more than 30 sailing under the German flag at the outbreak of war.

Holyhead, July 6.—The steamers Rappahannock and Dalegarth have been in collision off the Stack. The former has put into Holyhead badly damaged portside amidships and heavy list to port. The Dalegarth damaged her stem and port bow. She is proceeding east, probably to Liverpool.
