The steamship Boldwell was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UC-20, west of Malta on May 27th, 1917. The ship was on a voyage from the Tyne to Alexandria with a cargo of coal.
Three of her crew were lost including Hartlepool-born Arthur Short. The other two crewmen who lost their lives were P. Bruce and Ebeneezer Hill.
