On July 9th, 1917, the St. Vincent-class battleship HMS Vanguard sank following a catastrophic internal explosion while at anchor in Scapa Flow, Orkney. Over eight hundred crew were lost including three from the Hartlepools: Edward Egglestone, Thomas Hudson, and Edward Morrigan.
