Taken in 1967 by Robert Wood, the image shows the Grand Hotel on the right and in front on the far right is the back of Binns store. Ward Street was parallel to Binns and one side of the road shared a back street with the store. The Austin van in the centre is parked in Swainson Street although the buildings have been cleared to make way for the shopping centre. The cenotaph can also be seen on the picture.

Taken from Stockton Street probably in the very early 1960s, the image shows the south side of Ward Street. Robson's ironmongers, gas and electrical store is on the left in Stockton Street. It is interesting to note the car park sign which points to the very small amount of parking available at the top of Ward Street for shoppers at Binns.

The staff of Mason's Waverley Cafe are outside on the corner of Ward Street and Stockton Street on this lovely image. Myra Desborough nee Storm is second from the left . She was a baker and confectioner and worked in the basement below the shop.

Just before demolition in 1966. The sawmill was on a square of land bordered by Stockton St/Ward St/ Villiers St and Thornton St.

The bottom of the chimney appears to be being prepared for demolition.

Taken in Ward Street in 1952, the baby is Ian Coverdale. The picture looks west, past the Armoury on the left and Victory Square on the right with York Road in the distance, the church being York Road Methodist Church. This side of Ward Street shared a busy back street with Binns, with wagons entering at the Swainson St end and leaving at the Stockon St end.  Gillian Smith

Taken in January 1967, the image shows the final days of Ward Street with Binns in the background. The Middleton Grange Shopping Centre was built around the rear of Binns store so Ward Street more or less was on the mall where the post office now stands. The street is an example of one in the Max Lock Plan which was not 'blighted' but needed to be sacrificed for a shopping centre.
